“Gilligan’s Island” is coming to the big screen.

Josh Gad of "The Book of Mormon" has been signed to help write the screenplay for and play a lead role in the tale of seven stranded castaways whose comedic exploits were detailed during 98 episodes on CBS from 1964 to 1967. The popular show became even more popular in syndication, and the title character has become something of an American cultural icon.

No word on what character Gad would play, but speculation is centering on the Skipper.

Deadline.com said Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez will collaborate with Gad in writing the "Gilligan's Island" script, while Lloyd Schwartz, Ross Schwartz, Tracey Silvers and Cathy Silvers will serve as executive producers.

The television series about a boatload of disparate characters shipwrecked on an unchartered desert isle was created by Sherwood Schwartz, who is the father of Lloyd and Ross Schwartz. It starred Bob Denver as Gilligan, Alan Hale Jr., as the Skipper, Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer as Thurston and Lovey Howell, Russell Johnson as the Professor, Dawn Wells as Mary Ann, and Tina Louise as Ginger.

Tina Louise’s daughter, Caprice Crane, told "Today" she’d like to see Best Actress winner and “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence play the seductive Ginger. And she suggested the Professor should be cast as a gay man.

“My mom was constantly coming on to the Professor on the show, and he was never into it,” Crane told "Today." “So the Professor could be the gay one. It would explain a lot. It would be funny if they shake it up, make it worthy of today’s times.”

Told about a "Today" survey asking who should play Ginger (respondents opted for Christina Hendricks of “Mad Men”), Crane said: “I’m in love with Jennifer Lawrence. She’s so fresh and charming and I love her ideas. The last go-around when this was being discussed, Beyonce was suggested — and I think that would be a good idea. But Christina Hendricks is the obvious physical choice.”
