Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas was arrested early Thursday after a California Highway Patrol officer pulled him over for speeding and reportedly found a large cache of illegal fireworks in his Ford pickup.
TMZ was the first to report the arrest that happened after the traffic stop. The CHP called the Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad upon discovering the
fireworks that were said to be in the cab and bed of the pickup, TMZ reported. The site later said Arenas had been released without bail and that there were 100 pounds of fireworks in the truck.

Arenas, known during his all-star days as Agent 0, was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the second round of the 2001 draft, but soon became the NBA’s top scoring point guard. Arenas averaged nearly 30 points per game with the Washington Wizards in the 2005-06 season and once dropped 60 points on the Lakers at Staples Center.
Arenas signed a $111 million contract extension with the Wizards in 2008, but his career has gone downhill since. He was suspended for much of the 2009-10 season and sentenced to 30 days in a halfway house after he and former Wizards teammate
Javaris Crittenton drew guns on each other in the Wizards' locker room on Christmas Eve in 2009. He was later traded to the Orlando Magic and he last played in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2011-12 season, averaging but 4.2 points per game.
Arenas spent 14 games with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association last season, averaging nearly 21 points per game.
In 2012,
Arenas put his seven-bedroom, seven-bath home in Washington on the market for $3.5 million, the LA Times reported. The house includes a grotto and a shark tank and comes with a reported $5,000-per-month maintenance bill.
Social networking sites were abuzz with news and commentary about Arenas’ latest arrest.
“Gilbert Arenas fireworks? Where was his explosive play with the Magic?” wrote Roger Simmons on Google+.
“Trying out for the Sparks?” quipped @RobGeorge on Twitter, in a reference to the Los Angeles WNBA team.
Others weren’t laughing. “Gilbert Arenas used to be my idol bc of his story and how he made it to the NBA, it’s a shame how he turned out,” tweeted @TheGreatKellzby.
Arenas is 31 years old.
