"Ghostbusters" will be back in theaters come Labor Day to commemorate the film's 30th anniversary, Sony Pictures announced Thursday.

The studio also plans to celebrate the milestone with multiple special events and home-entertainment releases.

Directed by Ivan Reitman, the original 1984 film starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis, along with Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, has been restored and remastered and will open Aug. 29 for a limited run in more than 700 locations in the U.S. and Canada.

"'Ghostbusters' is still one of our studio's most beloved franchises — I was lucky enough to work on the release of the film on its first run, so it's a real thrill for me to see that it's still connecting with audiences everywhere," Rory Bruer, Sony's president of worldwide distribution, said in a statement. "On the big screen or in home entertainment, this is a great movie to experience again and again."

Following the theatrical release, Sony will release a "Ghostbusters" 30th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray and the "Ghostbusters II" 25th Anniversary Edition. Both releases will be available as a limited edition gift set that includes an exclusive collectible Slimer figurine and two-disc Digibook.

Both Blu-rays also contain bonus features, including conversations with Reitman and Aykroyd, as well as never-before-seen deleted scenes from "Ghostbusters II."

"To celebrate this milestone anniversary, we wanted to create something new and collectible for fans," Lexine Wong, senior executive VP of worldwide marketing for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, said in a statement. "These new 'Ghostbusters' Blu-rays will feature the highest quality presentation along with new content that reflects the rich history of this iconic franchise."

"Ghostbusters" isn't the only classic film slated to return to the theatres. Paramount Pictures announced Thursday that it will re-release Forrest Gump in IMAX for the film's 20th anniversary.

Plans for a third "Ghostbusters" movie have been up and down as the director dropped the project and star Ramis died.
