Backpacks full of school supplies lined the aisle at a Georgia teacher's funeral after she asked for supplies for needy students instead of flowers.

It was the final request from Tammy Waddell, who retired from the Forsyth County school district after decades of service in education, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. She died June 9 following a prolonged illness.

Her dedication to teaching children led her to make the request, and her cousin posted a photo of the donated supplies at her June 12 funeral.

“My cousin, a teacher, wanted backpacks with supplies brought to her funeral instead of flowers for needy students,” Dr. Brad Johnson posted on Twitter. “Serving others to the end.”

Dozens of teachers who taught with Waddell over the years served as pallbearers.

While Johnson’s tweet was shared more than 2,500 times, Waddell’s former students, parents, and teachers praised her for her dynamic approach to teaching on the online guestbook for the McDonald and Son Funeral Home

“You were the best fifth grade teacher,” a student said.

“May God bless the world with more teachers like her,” one woman wrote.

“A true public servant. Thank you, Tammy Waddell,” wrote another.

Waddell was named the 2003 Forsyth County Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year.

“Tammy was a servant leader that loved children,” said Jennifer Caracciolo, spokeswoman for Forsyth schools, the AJC reported. “The generous backpack/supplies donations in her memory is a touching tribute.”

The school district’s Project Connect will deliver the filled donated backpacks to students in need.
