A child with special needs was discovered locked in a cage at a Georgia home last week, and two women have been arrested for the crime.

A search of the Murray County home yielded a second cage, thought to have been used to imprison a second child with special needs, WRCB TV reported. An 8-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy were living at the home and had been kept in cages “for some time,” authorities said at a Friday press conference.

Stephanie Elizabeth Stone, the children’s mother, was arrested and charged with first-degree cruelty to children, false imprisonment, and possession of a controlled substance, WRCB said. A second woman, Wanda Sue Redfern, also was charged with first-degree cruelty to children and false imprisonment.

WRCB said the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services had investigated the home earlier this summer, but it wasn’t clear what actions, if any, had been taken. The home was investigated this week after a series of complaints were called in to authorities.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported that police received a call about 11 a.m. on Thursday saying a child had been left alone at the Chatsworth home. But when they arrived, they found a woman with the child and left. Another call came in later in the afternoon, with additional information about the situation, and deputies went to the residence again.

They found the two homemade cages, one empty and one holding the boy, the Free Press said. The children were placed in custody of GDFCS, and Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent Greg Ramey told the newspaper the children were "in good shape."

One cage was made of two twin bed frames wired together, and the other of wooden bed parts scrweed together, the Free Press reported.

Ramey told the newspaper the boy "was calm but he was ready to get out of the cage and that was accomplished fairly quickly."
