Students at the George Washington University have expressed outrage over a racist photo that was posted to social media by Alpha Phi sorority members.
The snapchat image, which according to WJLA shows two women holding a banana with a comment "I'm 1/16 black," went viral on Thursday morning, sparking outrage.
Students held a meeting on Thursday night to address the incident, which drew over 150 people, a source told Fox News.
Imani Ross, a member of the George Washington University Student Association, said students were disappointed with the situation.
"This is a fellow peer, a fellow classmate and for a student to think that was acceptable to do is just wrong."
University Provost, Forrest Maltzman, said in a statement per WJLA that the image was "disturbing, hurtful and not reflective of who I know we are as a community."
The GW University Panhellenic Association released an apology for the image via its Facebook page, noting that the photo "runs directly counter to our values and cannot be tolerated."
While many are calling for the expulsion of the women behind the photo, students at the university are not necessarily supporting this action.
Graduate student Tyrell Garner, who attended Thursday's meeting, said most people did not want to see the women being expelled, but they were calling for some kind of action.
"I would accept an apology and I could move past it," said Garner, according to Fox News. "We can all I'm sure could move past it, but first, it has to be addressed."
Ross said that university administrators were conducting investigations into the matter, according to NBC News.
"This incident is deeply troubling, especially after Alpha Phi recently attended a diversity training on campus this past month," she said.
