George Lucas Affordable Housing Units to Replace Scuttled Movie Studio

George Lucas is building and paying for a 224-unit affordable housing complex on his California property in affluent Marin County after neighbors scuttled his original plans to build a movie studio.

CNET.com reported that the project's details were three years in the making, and will see the "Star Wars" creator donate roughly $150 million for construction.

The housing complex will include 120 two- and three-bedroom apartments, and 104 one- and two-bedroom units.

"We've got enough millionaires here. What we need is some houses for regular working people," Lucas said of the project.

In addition to the apartment units, the complex will also have a community center, pool, barn, orchard, small farm, interior roadways and a bus stop. Seniors are likely to make up a significant part of the residents, as are police officers, teachers, and nurses.

Originally, Lucas planned on building a 263,701-square-foot movie studio on his 1,000 Grady Ranch, however neighbors said it would snarl traffic, hurt the environment, and possibly become an eyesore.

"The level of bitterness and anger expressed by the homeowners in Lucas Valley has convinced us that, even if we were to spend more time and acquire the necessary approvals, we would not be able to maintain a constructive relationship with our neighbors," Lucasfilm wrote in a statement in April 2012.

Not long after the studio idea was scrapped, Lucas announced his affordable housing plans, which were also met with opposition.

Carolyn Lenert, head of the North San Rafael Coalition of Residents, said the complex would "incite class warfare."
