George Clooney is recalling the day he showed up drunk to film a scene for the 1996 romantic comedy "One Fine Day." The actor was on his best behavior around co-star Michelle Pfeiffer but admitted during an appearance with Pfeiffer on Variety's "Actors on Actors" that one time he arrived on set drunk after a night out partying with a friend.
Clooney returned home late thinking he had the following day off but his plans to sleep it off were foiled by a message on his answering machine informing him that he needed to be on set early the next morning.
"I woke up at 5 in the morning," Clooney said. "I was like, 'I feel OK.' Then I looked in the mirror, and I was like, 'Oh, I'm still drunk.'"
Speaking to Pfeiffer, Clooney recalled the moment she busted him.
"I got to the set, and we walked to the trailer and I sat down and you looked at me. You go, 'What?' And I was like, 'I didn't know we were going to work today.' And you go, 'You're still drunk.'"
Clooney said he did his best to hide the smell of alcohol, but it did not help.
"It's a scene we did in a oner where you and I are talking back and forth to each other," Clooney said to Pfeiffer. "I kept trying to spray whatever mouth spray I could," he continued, adding that he smelled "like a distillery."
Clooney is among the few celebrities who have not openly struggled with addictions and while he maintains a clean image, "The Midnight Sky" star has previously admitted there were times when he did go overboard with alcohol.
"I drink at times too much," he previously told The Hollywood Reporter. "I do enjoy drinking, and there have been times in my life when it's crossed the line from being fun to having to drink late at night for absolutely no reason. So what I do is, I stop."
