George Clooney has ignited speculation by some on the right about a 2020 presidential run after the Oscar-winning actor announced that he pledged to make a $500,000 donation for a student march against gun violence.
Clooney wrote in a Twitter post that he and his wife – international human rights attorney Amal Clooney – would donate the funds to the March 24 march and even participate in the protest in Washington, D.C., titled "March for our Lives," Agence France-Presse noted.
A Twitter account dedicated to the survivors of the Valentine's Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, posted the announcement. Nikolas Cruz has been accused of using an AR-15 to kill 17 people and wound more than a dozen others in the country's latest school shooting, noted Vogue.
The pledge led the Drudge Report to trumpet a possible Clooney run for president against Republican President Donald Trump, linking to a story on the Showbiz 411 website about the donation and other charitable giving with the headline "Clooney 2020 Vision?"
The Showbiz 411 article made the suggestion of a possible Clooney political run, stating that the his presence in Washington, D.C. on March 24 "may signal a new political move by him."
"Will Clooney run for president? Last fall when he was promoting 'Suburbicon,' Clooney said this: 'Would I like to be the next president? Oh, that sounds like fun. Can I just say that I'd like anybody to be the next president of the United States. Right away, please.'"
Fox News' Sean Hannity appeared to mock a Clooney run on his Tuesday radio show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"My attitude is, 'Run, George, run,'" Hannity said on the show, per The Hollywood Reporter. "If George Clooney wants to run, I'm all for it. … I think Oprah Winfrey would be infinitely better as a candidate than George Clooney."
Hannity was referring to rumors last month that Winfrey, a past supporter of former president Barack Obama, may run for president after her speech at the Golden Globe awards.
"I think George Clooney's positions, when they come out, would be so asinine as to be hilarious," Hannity said Tuesday, noted The Hollywood Reporter.
