Gay Ban at Prom Nixed, So Some Students Try to Hold Their Own

Gay students demanding to attend high school proms with their same-sex partners is a common story, but some students at a high school in Indiana appear to be moving in the opposite direction.

A group of teens at Sullivan High School with about 600 students in the small town of Sullivan rallied to have a prom that bans gay couples, according to WTWO, a local NBC affiliate.

When administrators refused to meet their request, the students started planning their own prom, one that bans same-sex couples. The students are currently working to get the funds for the event.

The group met Sunday at the local First Christian Church to discuss their views.

"We don't agree with it and it's offensive to us," said Diana Medley, a special education teacher who doesn’t believe anyone is born gay. "I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal."

Student Kynon Johnson said he thinks more people will come to the traditional prom if it’s organized well.

"If we can get a good prom then we can convince more people to come and follow what they believe," he said.

Not everyone in the community thinks what the students are doing is right.

"We shouldn't be condemning people, and that's what judgment is. Christ came to save the people not to condemn them,” one resident told WTWO.

Several local pastors support the separate prom movement.

"Christians have always been prepared for a fight. Jesus gave us armor for the front, not the back; we're not running anymore," Bill Phegley with Carlisle Church told WTWO.

Jim Davis, a local resident, disagrees and told WTWO everyone should be considered equal.

"The feeling of being loved and belonging is universal," he said.

The group set up a Facebook page, 2013 Sullivan Traditional Prom, which has been taken down. Meanwhile, “Support the Sullivan High School Prom for All Students” has more than 1,000 “Likes.”
