Progressive Indian journalist Gauri Lankesh was shot and killed while entering her home after work Tuesday evening.

Lankesh was unlocking her door in West Bengaluru at about 8 p.m. when unidentified men shot her at close range, hitting her with three bullets, NDTV reported. She collapsed on the scene and was pronounced dead after being hit in the neck, head, and chest.

Three police teams are investigating the murder, and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the culprits must be caught, NDTV reported.

Lankesh was the older daughter of P Lankesh, who started the first Kannada-language newspaper. Lankesh was outspoken in her views and was considered leftist and anti-Hindutva.

International Business Times called Lankesh a “bold and fearless journalist,” noting that she advocated secularism.

Lankesh’s murder followed the assassination less than two years ago of former vice-chancellor of Hampi University M M Kalburgi, another scholar-rationalist. That murder was never solved.

"It is a cowardly and disgusting act," Siddaramaiah said of Lankesh's death, IB Times reported. "I have directed the police to nab the killers at the earliest. She was a renowned journalist, who fought against injustice."

He also said Lankesh had not asked for security during any of the times they met.

Lankesh was 55 years old. A postmortem is being conducted at the hospital, NDTV reported.

Followers and colleagues of Lankesh took to Twitter to lament her death and express their anger over it.
