Gateway Tunnel in Northeast Going Down the Tubes?

The Gateway Tunnel could be in jeopardy after the Trump administration axed funding for the crucial Northeast infrastructure project, potentially leaving 200,000 New Yorkers and New Jersey train commuters in the lurch, The Architect's Newspaper reported.

No federal funding would signify the death of the $13 billion project that sought to alleviate a critical bottleneck on the Northeast Corridor rail line by creating a two-track tube for Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains under the Hudson River, The Hoboken Patch said.

A proposed payment arrangement that would have seen Govs. Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie split the cost of the project with the U.S. government was approved in 2015 by the Department of Transportation under the Obama administration.

However, on Friday the Federal Transit Administration stated that no agreement had been in place.

"We consider it unhelpful to reference a non-existent 'agreement' rather than directly address the responsibility for funding a local project where nine out of 10 passengers are local transit riders,” wrote FTA Deputy Administrator K. Jane Williams in a letter to Cuomo and Christie, according to The Hoboken Patch.

Cuomo’s administration is fighting back.

State Budget Director Robert Mujica said in a letter to the FTA on Sunday that the payment arrangement had been discussed at length in a meeting held in August at the White House, during which President Donald Trump was present along with the governors of both states and the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, Bloomberg reported.

Mujical further noted that over 80 percent of the project’s cost would come from U.S. loans and grants that would be borrowed from federal programs by the states.

A federal official has since revealed that the U.S. Department of Transportation acknowledged the importance of the project and was “open to an arrangement for underwriting it that does not count a federal loan repaid by the states toward the local contribution,” The Architect's Newspaper noted.
