Gary Oldman went on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Wednesday and apologized for comments he made defending Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic tirade in a Playboy magazine interview that came out last week.
In the article, the British actor
defended Gibson and Alex Baldwin and, as Variety said, “blasted Hollywood.”

Playboy led into the interview by calling it a “candid” talk with Oldman, one of Hollywood’s highest-grossing actors. In the multi-page story, Oldman shared his views on the hypocrisy that shadows Hollywood.
“I just think political correctness is crap,” he told Playboy, and listed Gibson and Baldwin as examples of people overreacting.
His bluntness and viewpoints landed him in all sorts of trouble in the media.
Kimmel opened his Wednesday segment by saying thanks for showing up and that many people expected Oldman to cancel the appearance, given all the flack he has been taking since the Playboy interview came out.
But Oldman took the opportunity to apologize profusely for what occurred.
“I said some things that were poorly considered and once I had seen it in print I could see that it was offensive, insensitive, pernicious, and ill-informed. Words have meaning. They carry weight and they carry on long after you've said them and I don't condone or excuse the words I used in any context,” he said. “I have deeply injured and wounded a great many people. So, I appreciate you having me here and extending your hospitality to put me in this seat once again and it gives me the opportunity to say to those people that I, from my heart, I am profoundly sorry and deeply apologetic.”
Later in the interview, Oldman told Kimmel, “I just think that we're public figures and sometimes we're looked upon, asked to be social or cultural or political commentators and, I can't speak for other people, but I'm not, clearly,” he said. “I stepped out of my area of expertise and I just landed both feet in a hornet's nest ... it came over in a certain way and for that, I'm deeply sorry."
