Gary Johnson is calling Evan McMullin the presidential race "spoiler" now, after some poll numbers in Utah showed him at 28 percent, almost tied with Donald Trump (30) and Hillary Clinton (29), leaving Libertarian Johnson in the dust (5).

McMullin could be knocking on the door to become the first third-party or independent presidential candidate to win a state since 1968.

Perhaps feeling the pressure of the final days of the campaign, Johnson erupted in anger during an interview in Las Vegas with the Guardian’s Paul Lewis on Thursday.

“Both of the mainstream candidates are more unpopular than any other mainstream candidates in modern history,” Lewis said to Johnson, per The Hill. “So I guess the question is, why are you doing so badly?”

Johnson bristled, saying “I would argue just the opposite. This is phenomenal. We have $12 million; we’re at 10 percent-plus in the polls. We’re leading among independents, among young people, among active military personnel. This is a celebration.”

Johnson took it even further, asking why then was even there.

“Why are you even interviewing me — I don’t get it — if I’m doing so poorly? Is this to preside over a funeral here? It’s not a funeral; it’s a celebration.”

Then he lashed out at McMullin after being asked why the independent candidate is ahead of him in the state that’s also been the headquarters for his campaign.

“It’s a bit of a stretch to be comparing my candidacy with his,” Johnson said about McMullin surpassing him in Utah.

“He’s ensuring that Hillary Clinton will win Utah. You know what? He is what he is, and I begrudge no one for entering the race,” he said.

“I think that he is splitting the Republican vote. And Utah being predominantly Republican, I think he’s splitting the vote, that Hillary will actually win the state.”

Johnson told Lewis he’s simply tired of “the spoiler question, and then there’s the Aleppo question and then there’s the foreign leader question.”

“I’m not a dummy,” he said. “I’m not.”
