Former pop star Gary Glitter has been charged in Britain with eight sexual offenses involving two girls who were 12 and 14 years old when the crimes allegedly occurred in the late 1970s.

Glitter, whose birth name is Paul Gadd, was a successful musician in the '70s, but his career crashed when he was convicted of child abuse in Vietnam.

He was arrested in 2012 in connection with the Operation Yewtree investigation that was launched after police reported that BBC host Jimmy Savile committed numerous sexual crimes against young girls.

A prosecutor said Thursday that Glitter faces four counts of indecent assault; one count of "administering a drug or other thing in order to facilitate sexual intercourse"; one count of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13; and two counts of indecent assault, the Guardian reported.

Glitter will appear in court on June 19. Five separate allegations made against the former pop star were dropped, the Guardian said, because there wasn’t sufficient evidence to prosecute.

The Yewtree investigation last year shocked the British nation as 450 alleged victims of Savile came forward, when police had expected around 25.

“The sheer scale of Savile’s abuse over six decades simply beggars belief,” Peter Watt of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children told the New York Post. “He is without doubt one of the most prolific sex offenders we have ever come across, and every number represents a victim that will never get justice now [that] he is dead.”

Some have felt the same way about Glitter, and in 2008, many people spoke out against the inclusion of some of his songs in coursework for children in high school. The exam board later said they regretted including the work and would pull it.
