Gabby Douglas criticism on social media has been "hurtful" to the gymnastics star, who has opened up about her experience in Rio compared to four years ago when she was the darling of the London Olympic Games and won the all-round competition gold medal, according to the Washington Post.

While Douglas gained a gold medal in the team competition in Rio, she didn't qualify in her only individual event, the uneven bars, noted the Post.

In Rio, she has been publicly criticized for not holding her hand over her heart during the playing of the American national anthem, said the Post, and she distanced herself from her teammates. Her expressions while watching them compete left many speechless, but not all:

"When they talk about my hair or me not putting my hand up on my heart or me being very salty in the stands, they're really criticizing me, and it doesn't really feel good," Douglas said tearing up, said the Post. "It was a little bit hurtful."

Douglas pushed back on social media comments that she was jealous of teammates Simone Biles and Aly Raisman as they competed in the all-around competition, said USA Today. Douglas said some had mistaken her facial expressions.

"I was supporting Aly (who had just lost out on the gold), and I always will support them and respect them and everything that they do. So I never want anyone to take it as I was jealous, or I wanted attention. Never," Douglas said, per USA Today.

"I support them, and I'm sorry that I wasn't showing it, and I should have. But for me, it's just like – it's been a lot. And I've been through a lot. But I still love them. I still love the people who love me, still love them who hate me, and I'm just going to stand on that."
