Fyre Festival Lawsuit Seeks $100M After Failed Event

A $100 million lawsuit was filed Monday against the Fyre Festival and its organizers after the planned weekend of luxury in the Bahamas turned into a chaotic disaster.

Festival attendees paid up to $12,000 per person to attend the first-ever festival, but arrived to find makeshift tents and limp cheese sandwiches instead of the luxury accommodations and food they were promised. Many of the acts also canceled their appearances when they saw the chaos.

The suit for $100 million in damages was brought by celebrity attorney Mark Geragos on behalf of attendee Daniel Jung, who is seeking class action status for the thousands of ticket-holders who paid to attend the venue, Bloomberg reported.

The suit names the festival and its organizers, including rapper Ja Rule and business partner Billy McFarland, who run a talent booking startup Fyre Media that they started in 2015.

Ja Rule and McFarland said a combination of higher-than-expected attendance and rough weather just before the conference led to the poor conditions, but the lawsuit alleges organizers knew they were ill prepared for the Fyre Festival long before it opened, and that performers were warned to pull out ahead of time, but not attendees, Gizmodo reported.

Some attendees were stranded at the venue because they were encouraged not to carry cash, but to preload their money onto electronic wrist bracelets that couldn’t be used outside the festival when they wanted to leave, Gizmodo reported.

The festival website said all ticket prices will be refunded and that guests from this year will all get VIP passes to next year’s festival, which will be planned with festival experts and will take place at a U.S. beach venue.

Some on Twitter had a difficult time feeling sorry for rich attendees.
