Frontier Airlines announced a route expansion set to include 21 new cities and 85 new routes.

The airline plans to offer low fares to 90 percent of the U.S population by next spring, the company said in a news release Tuesday. The company said consumers are expected to save over $1 billion dollars from lower airfares.

"We are proud to announce the nationwide expansion of our unique brand of Low Fares Done Right which will empower millions more people to afford to fly," said Barry Biffle, president and CEO for Frontier Airlines in a statement. "We project this will save our customers over a billion dollars annually on their flights. These new flights will allow us to serve even more of America and make flying a truly affordable option."

Frontier Airline said it expected to double its non-stop routes to 312 by next year and to increase its total routes to over 1,000 while expanding its winter service to warmer destinations including Mexico, Miami and Tampa. Sweetening the deal, Frontier Airlines added that it would extend its schedule "with all flights on sale through April 7, 2018."

"Customers will benefit not only from the broad new selection of nonstop routes, but our growing network will provide more than 1,000 new connecting route options," Biffle continued. "By taking advantage of our natural share of connecting passengers, we can offer our low fares to even more of America. This is particularly important through our largest hub and our home in Denver."

The 21 added cities include 16 the company previously served along with five it never before served, USA Today reported.

The new cities are Buffalo; Charleston, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Ontario, Calif.; and Pensacola, Fla. The previously served cities are Albuquerque; Boise; Calgary; El Paso; Fargo, N.D.; Fresno; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Jackson Hole, Wyo.; Little Rock; Louisville; Oklahoma City; Palm Springs, Calif.; Reno; San Jose, Calif.; Spokane, Wash.; and Tulsa.

To accommodate the expansion, Frontier is expected to add 13 jets to its fleet and trim some flights from its current schedule, USA Today noted.

While many welcomed the expansion, others expressed dissatisfaction at changed flight schedules.

One customer explained on Facebook how a route she had booked last year was cancelled three days prior to the airline's announcement of its new route expansion, while another complained about rising prices.
