A frogman smuggler who allegedly brought more than three kilos of marijuana from Canada to the U.S. was busted early Monday morning after swimming across the border on the St. Clair River.

The frogman, who was not identified, had been towing an eight-pound container packed with pot behind him, the London Free Press reported.

A frogman is someone who is trained in swimming underwater.

The bust took place near Sarnia, an Ontario city near Lake Huron that borders the U.S.-Canadian border, a well-known smuggling point where many have been caught attempting to bring illicit drugs into the U.S.

The drug-smuggling frogman was spotted by authorities, who recieved a tip from a someone in the U.S. who reportedly spotted the man swimming in the waterway.

Surveillance camera operators located the unidentified man and monitored him until he made it ashore, where police from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s office welcomed him to the U.S. by placing him in handcuffs and arresting him at about 1 a.m.

He was reportedly dressed in full scuba gear when authorities found him.

The waterway the frogman swam to smuggle the drugs was apparently a busy international shipping channel that U.S. authorities said is extremely dangerous to swimmers, especially at night, the London Free Press reported.

"If there’s a freighter coming through there, there’s no way for a freighter to stop. That’s a very, very dangerous thing to do," Kris Grogan, of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, told the London Free Press.

The Canadian drug smuggler was turned over to the St. Clair County Drug Task Force.
