A Texas casket artist is offering free caskets to the families of all 26 victims of the Sutherland Springs church shooting.
Trey Ganem has been making custom caskets for 24 years with the idea of bringing families joy in a difficult time, according to ABC 7. He felt moved to do something to help the victims after hearing about the shooting.
“God has blessed me to be able to bless families and I’m trying to pay it forward,” Ganem said, ABC 7 reported. “We’re here to help and comfort them in any way we can.”
Ganem’s company, Trey Ganem Designs, is located in Edna, Texas, a small town east of Sutherland Springs. His personalized caskets sell for about $3,500, KTLA reported.
So far, 15 caskets have been requested by families.
“What we want to do is start the healing process here,” Ganem said, KTLA reported. “I want to make sure that we celebrate the lives of the people who were there.”
“We want people to know that we are here for them,” Ganem added. “We are praying for these families that were affected and we will continue to.”
The victims of the shooting included several children, including a 1-year-old girl and an unborn child. Ganem said he may paint some of the smaller caskets with Barbies or princesses.
Officials in the area have also said they plan to give each family $6,500 to help cover funeral expenses, Fox News reported. The money will come from a state fund for crime victims.
