Fox '24' Return Confirmed for 2014 as 12-Part Miniseries

The Fox drama "24" will be returning in 2014, the network confirmed Monday, for a 12-part miniseries "24: Live Another Day."

Actor Kiefer Sutherland will return as the show's lead protagonist, Jack Bauer, a government agent who thwarts terroristic plans.

"The response to ‘24’ is unlike anything I have ever experienced as an actor before," Sutherland said in a statement after the miniseries was announced. "To have the chance to reunite with the character, Jack Bauer, is like finding a lost friend."

Sutherland, son of longtime character actor Donald Sutherland, told fans they will not be disappointed.

"The story ideas from [producer] Howard Gordon are exciting and fresh, and will not disappoint," Sutherland added. "Make no mistake, my goal is to knock your socks off."

At the conclusion of the original series, which ended in 2010 after a nine-year run, the show's creators discussed turning the popular show into a feature film with the original cast.

However, Fox programming chief Kevin Reilly said producers reconsidered their plans after hearing the network's proposal to create a miniseries, Fox News reported.

"They always had this idea of maybe someday doing a feature film," Reilly said. "I think they all agreed '24' being compressed into two hours is not '24.'"

In addition to "24," the network announced 11 other new series coming to Fox during the 2013-14 season, two of which will be produced by television heavyweights Seth MacFarlane and J.J. Abrams.

Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan will produce another new Fox miniseries, "Wayward Pines," based on the best-selling novel "Pines." Starring Matt Dillon, the miniseries involves the search for missing federal agents in an Idaho town, The Associated Press reported.

The flurry of new shows comes at a time when the network is encountering declining ratings for the powerhouse "American Idol," which will return for its 13th season next January.

"American Idol" will be remaining in its prime time slot on Wednesday and Thursday nights; however, the same can't be said for the show's celebrity judge panel. Original panelist Randy Jackson recently confirmed that he will not be returning, while rumors that recent panel additions – Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban – will not be asked back for a new season.
