Football Player Ant Bites During Game Kill 13-Year-old Texan

The family of a Texas middle school football player is seeking answers after the 13-year-old died Monday from a severe allergic reaction to fire ant bites during a football game.

Cameron Espinosa, of Hass Middle School in Corpus Christi, died after being listed in critical condition and on life support for five days, according to KRIS-TV. The television station reported that the boy was attacked by fire ants during a game on Sept. 11.

"We know that there was not EMS on the scene according to some of the information I've collected for 20 to 25 minutes, and that's an issue," said attorney Thomas J. Henry who was hired by the family.

Henry told KIII-TV that the family sought out his help last week to get answers from the school and the school district.

"The parents have a deep concern over what types of policies and procedures are in place at the school district regarding one, responding to emergencies when children are at school; how the football fields are maintained; how pests like ants and insects are viewed by the school; what types of maintenance contracts they have," said Henry. "So I've been hired to investigate these issues and determine whether or not various individuals, companies or the school district has responsibility for this very, very unfortunate death."

Henry said his office is just starting its investigation and has not decided on filing a lawsuit.

Earlier, Espinosa's mom, Josephine Limon, told KRIS-TV that her "son was an amazing boy," and he had many friends at school.

Limon told the TV station that her son wanted to play football in college while studying medicine. She said "more trained personnel" at the game might have saved her son's life.

The Corpus Christi Independent School District announced on its website that it was offering grief counseling for students and staff at Hass Middle School and extracurricular activities at the school were cancelled for the rest of the week.

"We would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of this student," said a post on the school district's Facebook page. "The district will do all we can in support of the student’s family and the entire Haas school community during this sad time."
