Florida food critic Laura Reiley decided to reveal her identity to the world after hiding behind near-anonymity for 27 years.

Until now, the Tampa Bay critic has been able to slip into restaurants unnoticed and receive the same kind of treatment as other patrons without having the staff and managers trying to butter her up for good reviews.

“The rationale for anonymity is this: It allows a food critic to be like every other diner, to have the same kind of experience the guy at the next table is having,” Reiley wrote in the Tampa Bay Times, for which she has been an anonymous food critic for 10 years.

So why did she decide to make a big reveal now?

Reiley hopes to be more visible in the industry as she broadens her scope to focus on writing about topics including nutritional science, the food system agriculture and food technology, The Daily Meal reported.

“My stories will be accompanied by a picture now,” Reiley wrote in the Tampa Bay Times.

“You may see me judging a chili cook-off or introducing a cookbook author at the Tampa Bay Times Festival of Reading. And if you spot me at a restaurant? Give me a wink and enjoy your meal.”

The topic of whether a food critic should reveal their identity publically or not has been one that has always been hotly debated.

According to The Los Angeles Times, longtime Village Voice’s Robert Sietsema hid his identity behind a devil mask while Chicago Tribune food critic Phil Vettel uses a silhouetted outline of a man instead of his own photo on his Tribune author page.

And while photos of esteemed critic Pete Wells have emerged on social media, his written pieces and his author page still do not include a photo of his face.
