Flu in Krzyzewskiville Shuts Down Duke Students' Ticket Tent City

The flu epidemic has hit Krzyzewskiville, resulting in the temporary shutdown of Duke University's famous tent city outside Cameron Indoor Stadium, where students camp in the hope of receiving basketball tickets, The News and Observer noted.

According to Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs, the decision was made after several new cases of flu were identified among students from K-ville.

This year's flu season is believed to be the worst to occur within a decade and, according to Sports Illustrated, the university has opted to close down Krzyzewskiville to prevent the virus from spreading through the encampment.

There are about 70 groups of students camping outside the arena hoping to bag tickets for the March 3 game against North Carolina.

As part of Duke's tradition, the rule is that in order to qualify for tickets there must be at least one member of each 12-person group present in the tent during the day and six members at night, with periodic checks taking place, Sports Illustrated noted.

However, certain circumstances allow campers leeway and on Wednesday, the indefinite grace period began, The Duke Chronicle said.

Moneta said per the News and Observer that 125 students had received treatment for flu symptoms at Duke's Student Wellness Center since Jan. 10.

In the last week alone, there were "probably six or seven" Krzyzewskiville campers who took ill, he added.

Duke's Student Wellness Center began offering another round of flu shots on Thursday, and will continue to do so throughout the weekend.

Last week federal health officials said that this year's flu season is more intense than any observed since the 2009 swine flu pandemic, The New York Times reported.

In light of this, the Centers for Disease Control recommended that Americans get flu shots despite the late date.
