A Florida teacher's poisoning turned out to be just red pepper put in her soda, apparently by three middle school girls who face felony charges after being arrested and held in custody.

Jayne Morgan, 52, a teacher at Deltona Middle School, began to choke and experience shortness of breath after she took a drink of the soda, reported The Daytona Beach News-Journal. She also experienced stomach pains and a sore and scratchy throat.

Three 12-year-old girls were taken into custody. One of the girls was angry for being disciplined after being suspected of stealing a laptop and accused of pouring glue in a student’s backpack, the News-Journal said. She reportedly brought the red pepper to school and grabbed Morgan’s soda. A second girl is accused of pouring the pepper into the drink while a third distracted the teacher, the newspaper said.

Charges include poisoning food/water and tampering with consumer products.

The girls were held at the Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Morgan, who teaches language arts, said she wanted to press charged but didn’t know the girls would be arrested and taken into custody, the Sentinel said.

"My principal at Deltona Middle School has been very supportive, and the district is making the decisions as to how the case is handled," Morgan told the newspaper.

Morgan discovered the red pepper flakes after pouring her soda into a clear container.

“I want them to have a consequence that teaches them a lesson. I did not want them to be arrested and go to jail,” Morgan said, according to WESH-TV. “Teachers are out there doing the best we can for students. I love my students. They broke my heart. My career won’t be the same.”
