A Florida teacher recently read a controversial book about gay bunnies to a class of first graders and left parents hopping mad.
Pine Crest Elementary School teacher Tyler Bond earlier this year read the book "Last week Tonight with John Oliver Presents a Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo" to his first grade class, The Orlando Sentinel reported. The book focuses on acceptance of same-sex couples and is a dig at Vice President Mike Pence's book, "A Day in the Life of the Vice President."
Parents were up-in-arms over Bond's decision, sparking an investigation by school board officials.
"I don't think it's on him to make that decision to read this type of book to my child," one parent said, according to WKMG-TV.
"Noah comes home one day and asks us if it’s OK for two male bunnies to get married," grandparent Kraig Hudson told the news outlet. "I said, 'By our beliefs, no. But we do judge nobody.'"
Wendy Curry, whose son is gay, said the book should not be featured in an elementary school.
"That’s for me to decide at home, what I want to teach my child and what I feel they are able to handle," she said.
In a report released Friday, the Seminole County school district said Bond should have first checked with supervisors before reading the book, which was not part of the curriculum, to his class, the Sentinel noted. The report further stated that, while Bond suffered a "momentary lapse of professional judgment," he caused no harm to his students.
