A Florida man who just bought his own private island for $8 million was arrested Saturday for shoplifting about $300 worth of items from a Kmart.

Days before his shoplifting arrest, Andrew Lippi spent a fortune buying a private island off the coast of Key West to add to his luxury property portfolio but when it came to a few household goods, he was allegedly less enthusiastic to dig into his pockets, The Miami Herald reported.

The 59-year-old, who also owns a 12-bedroom home and rents out a waterfront home on Airbnb for $1,799 a night, was caught out after purchasing several items from a Key West Kmart then switching them out for cheaper items that he returned and then asked for a refund.

According to an arrest report viewed by WPLG, Lippi bought a Keurig coffee machine for about $150 on March 30, then placed a basketball inside the box and returned it a day later. On Thursday he reportedly returned to the store and purchased a Hamilton Beach coffee maker as well as two packs of LED light bulbs for around $105, which he then swapped out for cheaper versions and returned them in resealed boxes.

Lippi also purchased a bed skirt then allegedly placed a pillow case in the packaging before returning it.

When police questioned Lippi, he said he was innocent however, the Miami Herald noted that surveillance footage showed Lippi with a cart containing the bed skirt.

Commenting on the charges, Lippi said the accusations boiled down to a "commercial dispute" which he said was a complicated issue that he did not want to discuss.

"I will say this, that the way it was handled by Key West police and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department was wonderful. Some of the finest people I’ve ever dealt with who were kind throughout the whole process," he told the Miami Herald.
