A Florida crocodile was beached along Hollywood Beach Monday until it was captured by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers, according to the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel.

The crocodile was first spotted near the Dania Beach pier, floated south and came ashore near Johnson Street in Hollywood, an official told the newspaper. Police found themselves holding back curious visitors, most from the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, the Sun-Sentinel said.

Hollywood city officials tweeted a photo of the 6-foot crocodile, a native Florida species that is distinct from the more common alligator.

Joann Hussey, a spokeswoman for the city of Hollywood, told the Miami Herald that it appeared the crocodile sat around and enjoyed the nice weather for a moment.

"It was kind of right on the edge of the shores where the waves are breaking," Hussey told the Herald. "When the sun came out, it was kind of sunning itself."

Hussey said that the crocodile may have tired itself out by the rough surf. Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission cordoned off the area and kept swimmers away.

American crocodiles can grow up to 16 feet and live in brackish and salt water in coastal areas, but at times have been spotted in Hollywood, Boca Raton and other coastal cities, the Sun-Sentinel said.

The crocodile population is strongest in the Florida Bay, Everglades National Park, and the Upper Florida Keys, the Sun-Sentinel noted.

The crocodile, which is federally protected species, was a hit on social media. The creature was taken to "suitable habitat" after it was captured by officials and tagged, Katie Purcell, spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told the Sun-Sentinel.
