A Florida church is warning, "This is not a gun free zone" – following the shooting deaths of 26 people at a church in Texas earlier this month – and is using social media to help spread the word. The warning is signed by "the pastors."

The River at Tampa Bay Church sign, which has also been posted on Instagram and Twitter, sends a clear message that the congregation is armed the Tampa Bay Times reported.

"It is a deterrent," associate pastor Allen Hawes told the Tampa Bay Times. "Look at what is going on. In the past two months, look at what happened in Texas. Look at what happened in Las Vegas. Because we are a church that is on television, we are very involved in the community. We want people to know that this is a safe zone."

"I believe, if you look at the teachings of Jesus, Matthew, and different places in the scriptures, we see it will get increasingly darker – wars, rumors of wars, and people with not good intentions are going to look for a way to make a statement," Hawes told WTVT-TV, acknowledging the sign may ruffle feathers politically. "Would I rather ruffle a few feathers or do I want to count bodies?"

A New York church has sent the same message to its congregation, encouraging members to bring their guns to Sunday services along with placing a sign in front that reads: "We say it again. We are not a gun-free zone," Fox News reported.

"Ever since Sandy Hook, these individuals – whether it's in Sandy Hook, whether it's in San Bernardino – people like to go to gun-free zones to shoot 'em up," Pastor Ronald Russell of Lighthouse Mexico Church of God, located in Oswego County about 30 miles north of Syracuse, told Fox News.

"And we're just putting out a warning that we believe in the Second Amendment and we do carry, and it's not going to happen in our church."
