“Flip or Flop” couple Tarek and Christina El Moussa have reportedly split up after an argument that got police involved outside the HGTV stars' California home.
The incident took place in May when Tarek left the couple’s home in Orange County with a gun and took off down a hiking trail, TMZ reported. A 911 call was made to police about a “possibly suicidal male with a gun,” and 11 deputies responded along with a helicopter.
When the police found Tarek El Moussa, they told him to put down his weapon, which he did, according to TMZ. He told officers he wasn’t going to harm himself but wanted to blow off steam and brought the weapon for protection against mountain lions and rattlesnakes, TMZ reported, adding that five guns were seized from the home, including an AR-15.
Although the incident happened six months ago, the couple announced publicly to news outlets this week that they had decided to separate to “reevaluate their marriage,” TMZ reported. The couple plans to co-parent and to continue their professional relationship during the separation.
In a joint statement, the couple said, “We are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be. We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together,” People magazine reported.
They characterized the incident in May as a misunderstanding that was not violent and said the police were called “in an abundance of caution,” according to ABC News. The incident led to the couple seeking counseling and to their eventual separation.
HGTV plans to continue production on “Flip or Flop” as scheduled, despite the couple's split, according to ABC.
