Twenty students were taken to the hospital after a first-grader brought 11 packs of what was believed to be heroin to an elementary school classroom in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

The teacher of the class at Commodore John Barry Elementary School evacuated the room and called police and paramedics after noticing a girl playing with small plastic packets.

Two of the supposed heroin packets had been opened, according to CBS Philly.

“We know that one of the packages clearly looks like it was bitten and we do have one student saying that the young lady who did bring the substance to school did have that packet in her mouth,” Lt. John Walker said, according to the station.

The students in the class were bussed to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for monitoring and all were released.

Danitra Salley, a parent of one of the first-graders, told CBS Philly, “I was afraid. My son is just 7 years old. He shouldn’t be exposed to something like that. It just doesn’t make sense to me. It should never have been in the home.”

Police charged the girl’s mother and her live-in boyfriend with endangering the welfare of a child, possession of narcotics, and recklessly endangering another person, WPVI-TV reported. The station identified them as 32-year-old Marie Hunter and 28-year-old Christopher Troy-Jenkins White. The 6-year-old girl is in DHS custody.

Twitter users expressed disbelief.
