First-Grader on Free Lunch Program Says He Was Denied School Lunch

By    |   Tuesday, 18 Nov 2014 06:44 PM

A first-grader at Cascade View Elementary in Snohomish, Washington, said he was denied a school lunch and the person handing them out told him, "You can't have a lunch."

“It was a sack lunch. It was in a bag. She was passing it around to everybody. The lunch lady said, ‘Guess what? You can’t have a lunch.’ She said that. She said I can’t have a lunch,” the student, named Xavier, told Q13 Fox News.

According to the district, whenever a student’s account is negative $20 or more, the child gets a cheese sandwich, fruits and veggies, and a drink, Fox Cleveland reported.

But the boy’s father said Xavier is on the free lunch program, so his balance should have been covered.

The Snohomish County School District is investigating the Oct. 20 incident.

The issue of denying kids school lunches has made news recently in other areas of the country.

In January, a school in Utah threw away school lunches of students who owed money on their lunch accounts.

Coelho Middle School in Attleboro, Massachusetts, made news last year when about 25 middle school students were denied lunch because they had zero-balances on their pre-paid cards.

Twitter users expressed outrage.
