Ferguson Gun Sales Spike as Indictment Decision for Officer Looms

Guns sales in an around Ferguson, Missouri, are rising in advance of a grand jury decision on whether to indict Officer Darren Wilson for the August shooting death of teenager Michael Brown.

Customers at Metro Shooting Supplies bought 100 guns this weekend, compared with 30 in a typical weekend, owner Steven King told CNN.

Gun sales also are up 40 percent to 50 percent at Metro Shooting Range in Bridgeton, Missouri, and more customers are seeking training, manager John Stephenson told CNN.

Fear is the driving force in the city, which saw protests, riots, and looting after the killing.

"But not all of Ferguson is hooliganish,” King told CNN. “The media portrays us that way. If the world can just see this is one little street in Ferguson going crazy, they'd understand that we're not just one big burning city."

Dan McMullen, who runs Solo Insurance in Ferguson, told CNN that he’s been bringing an extra gun with a bigger magazine to work, not to protect his business, but to protect his life.

"So maybe I get trapped here or something and have to have a John Wayne shootout," McMullen told CNN. "That's the silly part about it: Is that going to happen? Not a chance. But I guess, could it? I'm the only white person here."

The grand jury has until January to issue a ruling, but a decision could come in mid-November.

King, of Metro Shooting Supplies, told CBS St. Louis that many customers are talking about the coming grand jury decision and what may happen afterward.

“They’re literally afraid for their life,” he said, according to the station. “You know that it’s a serious event when moms are coming in and saying, ‘I need to protect my family.'”
