Feminist Taylor Swift: Popular Parody Twitter Account Rewrites Lyrics

By    |   Monday, 17 June 2013 03:53 PM EDT

A senior at Brown University created a buzz – and 70,000+ Twitter followers – by revamping Taylor Swift’s lyrics to take a more progressive, feminist slant.

Clara Beyer tweeted on June 11: Idea for a single purpose Twitter: feminist Taylor Swift. A friend, Kevin Carty, pushed her to follow through and the next day, Beyer created @feministtswift, publishing reworked Swift lyrics.

The feed went viral because of Tweets like this one:

Beyer created her Twitter profile in a style somewhat like Swift’s real Twitter profile, to say: “Happy. Free. Confused. Oppressed by the patriarchy. At the same time.”

Re-tweets of Feminist Taylor Swift are flying around the Internet, with people taking the opportunity to point out their frustrations with Swift’s take on romance.

Swift takes a lot of general criticism about her song lyrics, with people pointing out that she tends to write about every relationship she’s in. In Vanity Fair, Swift said she finds the criticism of her songs “sexist” when she’s accused of being “clingy, insane or desperate” in her songs.

She told the magazine, "For a female to write about her feelings, and then be portrayed as some clingy, insane, desperate girlfriend in need of making you marry her and have kids with her, I think that’s taking something that potentially should be celebrated—a woman writing about her feelings in a confessional way—that’s taking it and turning it and twisting it into something that is frankly a little sexist."

Despite her protestations that she’s just talking about her feelings, people continue to jump on the Feminist Taylor Swift bandwagon.
