Feminist T-Shirt Censored in Middle School Class Photo, Outcry Ensues

An Ohio eighth-grader who happened to be wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the word "Feminist" on class picture day was surprised to later find the writing airbrushed out of the final picture.

"I sat down. No one said anything to me," the student, Sophie Thomas, told WXIX-TV of the shoot and resulting photo. "I checked it to make sure I didn't look dumb or anything — closing my eyes. I saw that they had removed the word from my shirt, and I was insanely upset."

"They didn't inform me about this," she added. "They just did it without permission."

That's when Thomas and her mother called administrators to find out what happened.

Kendra Young, the principal at Clermont Northeastern Middle School in Owensville, soon took responsibility for the airbrushing, saying that she thought some might find the word offensive. Young noted that the shirt did not violate the school's dress code.

"This particular photograph not only had the word 'feminism' in the front row very plainly could be seen, but there was also some young men in the background that were doing not appropriate things with their hands. So the principal made the decision to airbrush the word feminism and the hands out," Superintendent Ralph Shell explained.

Thomas said she will not purchase the class photo. Young apologized to Thomas, and provided her with a free copy of the unaltered photo. The airbrushed photo remains on display within the school.

On Friday, Thomas organized an event to raise awareness about feminism wherein she and others wore shirts with feminist slogans on them. She said people around the world heard about her story, and reached out with messages of support — including pictures of themselves wearing a "Feminism" T-shirt of their own.
