A Femen protester tried to snatch the baby Jesus from the Vatican's nativity scene Monday as people gathered in St. Peter's Square to hear Pope Francis' Christmas Day message, CNN reported.

The topless protester from the international feminist group was identified as Alisa Vinogradova, a Ukrainian "sextremist," CNN said. Vinogradova had "God is Woman" written on her body has she tried to grab the doll from the scene.

Vatican police stopped Vinogradova from taking the doll and she was detained, Reuters reported. The incident occurred about two hours before Pope Francis gave the annual Christmas message to thousands.

Femen has long had the Catholic Church in its crosshairs because of its conservative policies and traditional views on women in society, CNN reported. The group also tried to steal the baby Jesus from the Christmas nativity scene at the Vatican in 2014.

"The FEMEN act was directed against the Vatican's infringement of the rights of women to their own bodies," the group said in a blog post on its website. "In particular, against the policy of the 'Holy See' associated with the promotion of the ban on abortion and 'sacred condemnation' of contraception.

"…FEMEN encourages women to follow the example of the movement and kidnap babies from religious denominations, thus, stating their right to use of their own body. A child is not from a god, but from a woman. For a woman is God," the statement continued.

Reuters reported this past January that a topless activist from the group attacked a life-size statue of President Donald Trump during an unveiling at a wax museum in Madrid, Spain. She reportedly slipped past security ropes, placed her hand on the statue's crotch, before she was caught.

In 2016, Agence France-Presse reported that three Femen activists have been acquitted of exhibitionism for a 2015 topless protest at the trial involving ex-International Monetary Fund head Dominique Strass-Kahn.
