Danae Mines is the first female firefighter to be featured in the FDNY Calendar of Heroes, which came out on Tuesday.
“I wanted my picture in the calendar so that young girls and young women can see me and know that they can do this job,”
Mines told the New York Daily News.

An 11-year veteran, Mines is one of 41 female firefighters in the department.
Sales of the calendar benefit FDNY Foundation to promote fire safety education and provide equipment and training for firefighters.
Mines is featured in the month of March, wearing a gray tank top and red suspenders.
Some people told Mines that the calendar was for men only, and one person said she’d look like a pinup girl. But Mines is used to blazing her own trail.
“I wasn’t going to let anyone tell me I couldn’t do what I wanted to do,” she told the Daily News. “I was determined.”
Colleague Joe Conforti, who is on the calendar’s cover,
told CBS News that Mines wasn’t out of place when she auditioned with more than a hundred shirtless male firefighters.
"Her personality was glowing," Conforti said. "She came at you like she was meant to be there, and it was pretty cool."
Response to Mines’ inclusion in the calendar has been positive, including on Twitter.
