A father's instinct led him to hire a helicopter and find his 17-year-old son who was trapped for 30 hours in his wrecked car in a remote area in Australia.

Tony Lethbridge hired the helicopter to search for his son Samuel after he failed to show up at a friend's home on Sunday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Tony Lethbridge said remembering an accident five years before convinced him to search in the same area at Lake Macquairie in New South Wales.

"It stuck in my mind," Tony Lethbridge told Channel 7 News about the previous accident. "I thought, 'I can't leave him out there without looking.'”

"His mates were telling us he was a bit tired when he dropped his mate off on the central coast so [a crash] was the only thing we could think of," Tony Lethbridge said.

Michael Lethbridge, Tony Lethbridge's brother who was in the helicopter helping with the search, spotted his nephew's car 10 minutes into the search on Monday morning, about 65 feet down a bank off Pacific Highway at Crangan Bay, Channel 7 News said.

The BBC News reported it took emergency crews more than an hour to remove the teenager from the car, where he had been trapped under the dashboard.

Emergency personnel took the younger Lethbridge to John Hunter Hospital were doctors diagnosed him with an ankle injury, a fractured forearm, and a compound fracture to his femur, an ambulance spokesman told the Morning Herald.

Tony Lethbridge told the Morning Herald his son was in intensive care, but he was getting better.

"He's still got a dislocated elbow, his right arm is broken, he's got a few other bits and pieces but he's on the mend," Tony Lethbridge said.
