Dozens of neighbors came together Wednesday in St. Charles, Iowa, to harvest the crop of a farmer who died of a heart attack in May at age 58 just after planting the crop.

Van Brownlee's wife, Lisa, was grateful for the help gathering in about 235 acres of corn and 165 acres of soybeans he had planted, according to the Des Moines Register.

"It's a really good community," Lisa Brownlee said to the Register.

Steve Downs, who had been Van Brownlee's friend since junior high school, said it was something Brownlee would have done for his neighbors, the Register reported. Downs organized the harvest. He remembered a time not long ago when Brownlee helped harvest hay for another neighboring family after the man was killed in a farm accident.

"He was just a good old boy … a good person who always tried to do the right thing," said neighbor Alan Brommel to the Register. "That's all I'd wish for people to think about me," Brommel said.

Downs said the event was planned through word of mouth and that people began calling him to get involved, the Register reported. In the end, more farmers showed up than even he expected, he said.

A similar event occurred near Decatur, Nebraska, where friends and neighbors came together earlier this month to harvest about 600 acres of his soybeans planted by Joe Penney, who died in a motorcycle accident in August, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

"It was so moving," his daughter, Jenny Penny, said, according to the newspaper. "It really brought home how much Dad meant to people that they would take their time from their family (farm) operation and come harvest dad’s crop."

Corn and soybeans were affected by earlier dry weather and were expected to be less robust than a normal year, Wallaces Farmer reported.

Twitter users praised the community effort.
