Seven fans were fatally electrocuted while watching a Manchester United soccer match on TV in Nigeria.

Police say seven people are dead and several others were rushed to the hospital after an electric cable fell on fans in Calabar, a city in southern Nigeria, according to BBC News.

Witnesses said they heard a "loud explosion" that came from an electrical transformer. Following that sound, the cable fell, and one witness said he saw at least 16 bodies, including children, that had been affected by the accident.

According to goal.com, initial reports indicated as many as 30 fans were feared dead as a result of the incident. Police later confirmed that seven people died.

The incident took place around 10 p.m. Thursday night, and police were called to the scene.

"Until this morning, we have about seven persons dead, we have 10 that have been admitted to the hospital and another one in intensive care," police said in a statement, according to goal.com.

"According to the information we gathered, the high tension electric cable that was very close to the viewing centre fell on the building," police said.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari offered his condolences to the victims in a statement, saying he was "shocked and saddened" about the tragic incident, adding that the deaths of "the mostly young victims is a big blow not only to their families, but also to the football-loving nation," BBC News noted.

Manchester United also offered their sentiments to the victims of the families that lost their loved ones.
