A family was hit by lightning while camping near the Sequoia National Park in California on Labor Day, with part of the incident being caught on tape.

Christopher Lovera and his two children – Aidan, 12, and Nadia, 9 – were on their first family's backpacking trip, where they fished near the lake when clouds came in, KFSN-TV said.

A couple across the lake was shooting video in the direction of the Lovera family when the lightning came down on a tree and threw all three in the air.

"That's where pretty much where our combined story ends, and after that, it was waking up to an individual scene of trauma," Christopher Lovera told KFSN-TV. "It's very visceral seeing the red, orange just flash down the tree and the explosive power of it hitting the ground."

The Washington Post said all three lost consciousness before other campers came along and rescued them.

"We all blacked out, and we didn't hear anything either," Aidan Lovera told the television station. "When I first saw dad, I thought he was dead because I didn't see him breathing or moving."

Christopher Lovera, 51, sustained first- and second-degree burns on sections of his upper right back, arm pit and down his arm, the Monterey Herald reported. He was temporarily paralyzed for the first few hours with his clothes burned off his body.

He and his son suffered ruptured ear drums. Nadia Lovera suffered burns on the back of her right arm and on her upper thighs, and also sustained partial paralysis as well.

"Aiden unfortunately took a little bit more of the strike," Lovera told the Herald, saying his eardrum was blown out and he sustained burns on his leg.

Christopher and Aidan Lovera have since consulted with an ear, nose, and throat specialist and hope that the damaged ear parts will re-generate, the Herald reported.

"I am most certainly alive, Aidan and Nadia as well, because of the common and selfless bravery of so many wonderful people," he said.
