'Facebook At Work' Shifts Focus From Social to Professional

By    |   Tuesday, 18 Nov 2014 10:12 AM

"Facebook at Work" is a previously secret project that the world's largest social network plans to launch soon, rivaling sites like LinkedIn, Slack, Yammer, and Campfire.

The Financial Times reported Monday that Facebook is already testing the service with external companies, and has been working on the service for over a year.

Facebook at Work will allow users to maintain a professional profile separate from their social profile, and come complete with versions of the familiar News Feed home screen as well as groups, chat, and more.

LinkedIn has long dominated the professional world with its public directory of professional profiles and their connections, and products like Microsoft's Yammer have led the "enterprise social networking" space for years – allowing employees alternatives to email and channels for inter-departmental communication.

Facebook's new work product could potentially rival both sectors, vacuuming up market share and the billions of dollars that could come with it.

Facebook already has 1.3 billion monthly active users, a large percentage of which already use Facebook during work hours — some for professional purposes, some for less-productive purposes.

What remains unclear is how such a service would be monetized. LinkedIn's basic services are free, but it also relies on fees reaped from premium services as well as advertising revenue. Enterprise social networking products like Yammer rely on traditional subscription fees.
