House Majority Leader Eric Cantor says White House senior adviser David Plouffe is off base when he claims President Barack Obama has taken the lead in talks on tax cuts and deficit reduction,
Politico
reports.
“We’ve had to bring this president kicking and screaming to the table to cut spending,” Cantor said on "Fox News Sunday." “I then hear they’re going to present a plan as to how to address the fiscal situation . . . In my opinion it’s really hard to believe what this president is saying.”
“Right away, they’re insisting that we have to go about looking at raising taxes again all while holding up the tax agreement that as signed in December,” Cantor said. “On one hand, we’re going to defend that tax agreement then go about violating it.”
Cantor promised that Republicans would oppose raising the debt limit unless it was accompanied by measures to avoid increasing the deficit.
