Eric Ashby vanished during a treasure hunt for $2 million in June but now his family may finally find some closure after officials identified a body discovered in the Arkansas River in Colorado last year as that of the 31-year-old adventurer.

Ashby went missing during a rafting accident on the Arkansas River in Colorado last June while searching for treasure hidden by New Mexico author Forrest Fenn, Fox News reported.

A body was found downstream a month later, and through DNA testing, authorities were finally able to positively identify the remains as Ashby's.

At the time of the accident, Ashby was with at least three other friends.

His father, Paul Ashby, described how his son lost control crossing the river and became entangled in the ropes, according to KMGH-TV.

Eric Ashby's friends saw him go under and not come back up to the surface but allegedly did not call for help and only reported the treasure hunter missing 10 days later.

According to Fox News, a man's body was later discovered in the river near the LafargeHolcim cement plant east of Florence by Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers.

An autopsy was performed and DNA samples that were sent to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation were then compared to Paul Ashby's DNA.

A final report positively identifying the remains as Eric Ashby's was released on Friday, after his family was notified.

This is the third death to occur in less than two years while searching for the treasure that Fenn claims is buried somewhere in the Rocky Mountain, Westwood reported.

After the death of Broomfield's Randy Bilyeu in 2016, Fenn told the weekly Denver publication that the deaths were a tragedy but that he did not regret starting the treasure hunt.

"Accidents can happen anywhere," he said at the time.
