Elvis mania has swept the country as celebrations honoring The King's 85th birthday begin. Keeping up with the rock 'n roll fever, here are 10 secrets about Elvis Presley's life that you may not have known:

  1. He was not popular at school. Back in sixth grade, Elvis Presley would take his guitar to school and play it at lunch, but the other children teased him for playing "hillbilly" music, according to Greeningz.
  2. He never performed outside North America. Elvis was a worldwide sensation who transformed music history, but despite this he never toured the world. In fact, he did not even play outside of North America, Direct Expose reported.
  3. He was related to presidents. Elvis Presley was related to former President Jimmy Carter and allegedly was a distant relative of Abraham Lincoln, Greeningz noted.
  4. He trusted just one hairdresser. There was only one man who Elvis trusted to cut and style his hair, and that was his mother's hairdresser "Mr. Gill." Elvis would reportedly fly Mr. Gill to various locations to have his hair trimmed, according to Pouted.
  5. Priscilla Presley was 14 when she met The King. Elvis, who was drafted into the Army, was stationed in Germany when he met his future wife Priscilla. She was 14 and he was 24, Direct Expose noted.
  6. He was conflicted about his daughter's birth. When Lisa Marie Presley was born, Elvis was torn between joy and heartache. He was ecstatic to welcome her into the world, but at the same time he was filled with sadness thinking that somewhere in the ghetto a child was born into poverty.
  7. He collected guns. Elvis was an avid gun collector. According to pouted, he owned 37 rifles, guns, and machine guns. He also reportedly carried a pistol around in his boots after receiving a kidnap-assassination threat.
  8. He survived a tornado. In 1936 when Elvis was a young boy, a tornado destroyed his hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi. It is believed to have been the worst tornado the town had ever seen, Greeningz reported.
  9. He was best friends with Johnny Cash. Elvis and Johnny Cash were very close friends. So much so that they would often do impersonations of one another, Pouted noted.
  10. He never saw his wife without makeup. It has been reported that Elvis never really saw Priscilla without any makeup on. He also allegedly did not like watching her get dressed, Direct Expose noted.
