Sir Elton John said in a weekend interview that if Jesus Christ were alive today, Jesus would approve of priests getting married, both straight and gay.
"These are old and stupid things," John said while discussing the Church of England's mandatory vow of celibacy for priests and prohibition of gay marriage. "If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen."

John made the comments while sitting down for an exclusive interview with Sky News' Dermot Murnaghan to discuss the launch of his new charity fund, which will support young athletes seeking to compete in the Olympics and Paralymics.
During the conversation, John also praised Pope Francis, saying, "The new Pope has been wonderful, he's excited me so much. He's stripped it [the Church] down to the bare bones and said it's all basically about love."
Asked about his own upcoming wedding to longtime partner David Furnish, John said, "I don't think we can get married until next year. However, when we do do it will be very quiet and off the cuff — we had our big shebang when we had our civil union."
John was also asked about his upcoming November meeting with Vladimir Putin, where he plans on trying to convince the Russian President to improve the country's track record on gay civil rights.
"I will see Putin and talk to him — I don't know what good it will do though," he said.
John anticipated raising £500,000 ($860,000) for his new Olympian fund during the weekend's big kickoff.
