When Ellen DeGeneres showed up to the White House on Tuesday to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom with more 20 others, she almost didn’t get in.

DeGeneres posted a picture of herself on Twitter waiting outside the White House because she forgot her ID, which is typically required to enter the building.

After security officials verified her identity, DeGeneres was allowed in for the ceremony, where she was honored for her courage in coming out as a lesbian 20 years ago when it was uncommon for television stars to do so, ABC News reported.

“It’s easy to forget now, when we’ve come so far, now that marriage is equal under the law,”  President Barack Obama said, “just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago. Just how important it was.”

The Medal of Freedom represents the highest honor bestowed on a civilian for “individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors,” ABC News reported the White House as saying.

Others receiving the award include Diana Ross, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Robert DeNiro, Tom Hanks, Robert Redford, and Bruce Springsteen as well as scientists, writers, artists, and leaders in other fields.
