Ellen DeGeneres is facing backlash after comparing her self-isolation in her mansion to jail. The comedian cracked the joke earlier this week during an episode of her show, which she hosted from the luxurious comfort of her home amid the coronavirus pandemic.

DeGeneres first spoke of what it was like spending so much time with wife, Portia de Rossi, as people are urged to stay at home and practice social distancing.

"Portia and I have been quarantining for three weeks now and it’s nice, actually, because we get to spend time together and talk and just really get to know each other, right? Did you know that she’s Australian? Fascinating," the 62-year-old star said, according to Fox News.

However, DeGeneres then compared quarantining to life behind bars.

"This is like being in jail is what it is," she said. "Mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay!"

Viewers were up-in-arms over the "tone-deaf" remark.

"I CANNOT stress how absolutely tasteless and tone deaf this joke is especially in the context of prisoner literally being left to die in prison from #covid19 exposure," one Twitter user wrote.

"My 19 year old daughter is considered an 'essential employee'. She's a fast food worker. She's exposed EVERY DAY. No one GAF about Ellen's privilege pampers a$$ stuck in her mansion. Show me @ellen working the lines @ the grocery store. NO mask, NO gloves. Then I might care," another stated.

Another Twitter user encouraged DeGeneres to leave her mansion and experience the life of those on the front lines of the battle against coronavirus.

"Hey, Ellen, go volunteer at a grocery store or food bank. Get on the front lines if being sequestered in your mansion is just too difficult. Unbelievable," the tweet read.

DeGeneres is not the only celebrity under scrutiny from the public. Actress Bette Midler was also slammed for coming across as "tone-deaf" and "self-absorbed" after she tweeted about learning to use her home appliances and praised "housekeepers" who were hunkered down amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"I never knew my appliances as well as I’m starting to know them. So grateful to #Kenmore and #Maytag," Midler tweeted last week. "This is no joke. I salute housekeepers around the globe, doing your best to keep your families well, safe and alive."

The "Hocus Pocus" star has a net worth of roughly $230 million and recently put her New York City penthouse on the market for $50 million. She drew widespread criticism for comparing her lavish lifestyle to the middle and lower class U.S. citizens.
