Eyes, hair, body -- we all have a preference when it comes to what makes other people more appealing to us but a new study has revealed the one trait that people find most attractive. And it's not what you may think.
EliteSingles and Babbel surveyed over 6,000 singles from 11 countries and nearly all respondents agreed they would prefer to date someone who could speak another language. The stats put to rest the age-old debate of whether brawn beat brains or vice versa. In fact, 93 percent of Americans found that speaking a different language was the most attractive trait in a partner, ELiteSingles noted.
The reason behind this has to do with the fact that American singles tend to prefer worldly matches. Over 50 percent of US respondents can already speak more than one language, which vastly widens the dating pool for them, while 61 percent who are only fluent in one language are prepared to learn another to improve their wooing capabilities.
"Being able to communicate is fundamental to human interaction," noted Julie Hansen, CEO US of Babbel. "It’s no surprise that in 2018, in the global society that we all live in, being able to speak other languages is such an important quality in a partner."
So, what are the most romantic languages? French took top spot as the most attractive, with Italian and Spanish coming in a close second and third, respectively.
The good news is that it may be easier than first thought to pick up a new language. Studies have revealed that television and radio could be great tools for new language learners, Reader's Digest reported. The research is based upon the theory that listening to new sounds silently could result in greater retention.
That does not mean it is time to ditch class just yet but as Melissa Baese-Berk, a linguist and co-author of one of the studies pointed out, it can't hurt to tune the TV or radio in to a language you want to learn and keep it playing on the background.
"Even if you’re not paying total attention to it, it’s going to help you," she said, per the Reader's Digest.
