Ed Sheeran said substance abuse made him take a year off music to focus on getting his life back on track, People magazine reported.

The 26-year-old "Shape of You" singer revealed this when he sat down to chat to Jonathan Ross in an exclusive interview to air this Saturday.

Speaking about his experience, Sheeran told "The Jonathan Ross Show" host that he battled to adjust to the music industry and constantly touring and found himself falling into typical pitfalls.

The singer has previously admitted to drinking too much, which is one of those pitfalls, but this is the first time he has spoken openly about the use of drugs.

"I started slipping into it, and that's why I took a year off and buggered off," he told Ross, according to People.

E News noted that Sheeran's hiatus came ahead of the release of his third album, "Divide," which dropped in March this year.

During the yearlong break, he embarked on a social media blackout and got rid of his phone in an effort to clear his head.

It seems the break, along with the support of his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn, was what Sheeran needed to escape the lure of the dark side of the music industry.

In the interview with Ross, the singer explained how he did not notice that he had a problem with substance abuse until people close to him told him to calm down.

"It's all fun to begin with, it all starts off as a party, and then you're doing it on your own and it's not, so that was a wake-up call and taking a year off," he said, per People.

He added that living with Seaborn helped ground him.

"I was a 25-year-old in the music industry on tour, so I just needed someone to balance me out."

Sheeran has been in the news quite a bit lately, most recently for a bicycle accident that left him with a broken arm that could potentially affect his upcoming tour.

"I've had a bit of a bicycle accident and I'm currently waiting on some medical advice, which may affect some of my upcoming shows," he wrote on Instagram.

"Please stay tuned for further news."
